Davis first gained wide recognition after joining Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers in 1990 and has since become a consistent presence on the international jazz scene. The New York City Jazz Record calls him “a major jazz trombonist,” while JazzTimes notes his reputation as both a lyrical improviser and a prolific composer. DownBeat observes that Davis “thoughtfully balances modernism, lyricism, and drive—as a writer and a player.” A longtime favorite at Smoke, he brings an unmistakable voice that is widely admired by both audiences and peers. He appears alongside George Cables, whose influence and body of work place him among the most respected pianists in jazz history. All About Jazz writes, “Anyone who is serious about jazz will tell you that George Cables belongs in the pantheon of the greatest jazz pianists.” The group is led by alto saxophonist Vincent Herring, described by The New York City Jazz Record as “one of his generation’s masters.”
