“[Coleman] is still one of the most fluent and inventive tenor saxophonists around.”
– The Guardian
Smoke celebrates its 25th Anniversary led by the legendary tenor saxophonist who launched the then-new club on its first night, April 9, 1999, the great George Coleman! Downbeat says, “When you hear the tenor sax of George Coleman, you know it’s him within a few notes. That deep spark of a tone evokes a time and place—be it his historic work with Max Roach, Chet Baker, and Miles Davis, or as a leader in his own right.” He is leading three exciting groups for the occasion; the first—starting on Wednesday night—features pianist Emmet Cohen, bassist John Webber, and drummer Joe Farnsworth—who was also inaugurated the Smoke stage 25 years ago. The next three nights—Thursday, Friday, and Saturday—feature a band with guitarist Peter Bernstein, pianist Michael Weiss, bassist John Webber, and drummer Carl Allen. Then, concluding on Sunday, guitarist Russell Malone replaces Bernstein in the quintet.
