Two of the most exciting new artists in jazz, pianist Micah Thomas and saxophonist Nicole Glover, join forces for the final night of “Monk’s Sphere,” which also marks the end of the first week of Smoke’s Thelonious Monk Festival. Rounding out the quartet are two esteemed masters: bassist David Wong and drummer Carl Allen. Saxophonist, bandleader, composer, and educator Nicole Glover has established herself as a rising star and a musician in great demand. Her most recent solo recording, Strange Lands, features the venerable pianist George Cables, and she is also an integral member of ARTEMIS, the acclaimed collective led by Renee Rosnes. Glover currently performs with bassist Christian McBride’s new quintet and has toured and recorded with Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. She has also worked with such distinguished artists as Al Foster, Victor Lewis, Dee Dee Bridgewater, and Joel Ross. Pianist and composer Micah Thomas is part of a new generation of jazz musicians bringing a deep knowledge of the tradition to their own work. His playing is marked by a singing tone, rhythmic flexibility, and harmonic sophistication. He has performed and recorded with artists including Charles Lloyd, Immanuel Wilkins, Ambrose Akinmusire, Lage Lund, and Walter Smith III, and has released two recordings as a leader, Taurus and Reveal. His work as a pianist, composer, and bandleader has made him a highly sought-after collaborator on the contemporary jazz scene.
